disease susceptibility
The Abyssinians are usually healthy cats, which do not develop tendencies towards particular susceptibilities when kept appropriately. However, the breed is partially burdened with hereditary diseases such as PK (Pyruvate Kinase), an incurable, chronic regenerative hemolytic anemia, in which the red blood cells dissolve or also PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), a retinal disease, which destroys the eye's photoreceptors and blinds the cat. However, DNA testing is available for both recessive disorders, allowing responsible breeders to selectively intervene to limit the spread or breed only healthy animals. There are currently no test methods available for the comparatively rare amyloidosis, a congenital, untreatable defect in protein metabolism that usually ends in acute kidney failure, and the inheritance has not been clarified. However, the appearance does not remain hidden from a careful breeder, so that he can react accordingly and no buyer has to fear.
